Move over, Ben & Jerry!

Welcome to the greatest collaboration of all time. Two companies, one glorious country. In celebration of Bollman Hat Company’s 150th anniversary (yes, you read that right), the two greatest hat companies of all time, American Hat Makers and Bollman Hat Company, have partnered up to release some never before seen, yet timeless hat styles to commemorate both of their long and successful histories. Combined, this endeavor brings two hundred years of hat-making expertise to the table. These breathtaking new hats are brought forth by the top designers from both of our companies. These hats are made in extremely small batches, one at a time, by the finest American artisans, so please allow 4-6 weeks for your hat to be crafted. The Small Batch Collection is now available for only a short while, and can be found here! Each hat is going to be sold for $300  and comes with a USA made Hammer Plastics Hat Carrier, complete with lockable latches and a built-in mirror.

The Headwear Association 111th Annual Dinner

Originally founded in 1908 in New York City, The Headwear Association is the oldest trade association in the fashion industry, and is dedicated to promoting hats and the headwear industry throughout the world, and to foster goodwill and fellowship among those engaged in the headwear industry.

This year’s dinner is a bit of a special time for not just us here at American Hat Makers, but for everyone at the Headwear Association. Garth’s term as president has come to an end, and at tonight’s dinner we are passing the torch to Gerry Miller Jr.

“Serving as president has been an ultimate honor”, says Garth. “Being able to usher new business relationships and do my part to drive the hat industry to new heights has been such a gift.”

The night went so splendidly. Naturally, we started with the business end of things, and to unwind after that we had a little cocktail hour. After that, we had a wonderful fashion show featuring all of the new styles that everyone is testing out. It was absolutely amazing!

Seeing all the gorgeous outfits made us quite hungry, and we ate a fabulous dinner to prep us for the awards show. Retailer of the Year went to Hatsational!

The Ben Rosenthal Award went to Douglas Highsmith of Dorfman Pacific hat company.

The Lieberman Award went to the one and only Garth Watrous of American Hat Makers.

And finally, the Fit Scholarship went to Marisa Belfiore.

American Handbag Makers?!

IMG_1689

American Hat Makers is pleased to introduce you to our new line of gorgeous handbags and accessories made from repurposed leather scraps from our hat making facility.

As American Hat Makers has grown, we have found ourselves with more and more scrap leather left over from our increased hat production. As dedicated stewards of our natural resources we wanted to utilize our leftover leather in a meaningful way.

To that end, our talented designers have worked with our team to produce these gorgeous, super-durable leather handbags and totes. The result is beautifully simple handbags that show off their raw, bohemian nature and offer extreme durability, water-resistance, and a lifetime guarantee.

1697

Just like our hats, these bags are proudly Handmade in America with high-quality leather. Each bag is unique –  as no two pieces of genuine leather are alike. Each scrap of leather is being repurposed into a one-of-a-kind piece.

IMG_1706

In addition to our tote, messenger, and festival bags, we also offer handmade leather chokers, cuffs, and bag accessories. Now you can be fully outfitted at Coachella with your hat, choker, cuff, and bag!

IMG_1738

Our sturdy totes come in small, medium, and large sizes – pick the perfect one for the days’ errands, a trip to the beach, or a day at work or school.

Perfect for school, work, or every day, our men’s and women’s satchels are made of supple leather and feature a long shoulder strap that can be easily adjusted with fashionable brass rivets.

IMG_1676

Effortlessly channel the easy-going music festival vibe every day of the year with our fringed shoulder bags in a small or medium.

Come check out our smokin’ deals on these awesome bags all of which are available in black or natural brown.  Because we are repurposing leather that may otherwise end up in the landfill, we are able to offer these items to you at incredible prices – but you better act fast, because once they are gone, they are gone!

Stepping Stones to Success; An interview with Greg Reid.

Greg Reid, American Hat Makers, San Diego (1)

Published in over 60 books in 45 languages, Greg Reid is no stranger to success. Filmmaker and keynote speaker, Greg is also a best-selling author, entrepreneur, and CEO of several successful corporations, who has dedicated his life to helping others achieve the ultimate fulfillment of finding and living a life of purpose. Along with these accomplishments, Greg is the founder of Secret Knock, a wildly successful, invitation only seminar that unites influential entrepreneurs and investors in one place to discuss points of business.

18670821_10155333710839458_8218418030217550125_n[2]

Greg is a San Diego native, growing up in the beach town of Del Mar, California. When asked how he defines success, Greg told us that success is the freedom to be able to live the life you desire. If you’re able to live and operate the life you set out for, you are successful. The key to long-term success is surrounding yourself with people you have respect for, rather than influence over. When asked about his ideals, Greg starts off by saying he very freely shares information. He’s got no secrets. Everyone he surrounds himself with is involved with all aspects of his life. He puts emphasis on accentuating your positive aspects, and illuminating the negatives rather than hiding them, thus giving yourself the chance to learn from them. Authenticity is the ability to share the uncomfortable parts about yourself. By focusing attention on the defects, you give yourself the opportunity to make change.

Greg Reid, American Hat Makers, San Diego (4)

Greg attributes his success to his approach to criticism. Rather than seeking an opinion on his endeavors, he seeks counsel, the difference being that opinions are largely based on ignorance, while counsel is derived from the wisdom of those who have done it before you. He describes that when he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, he did not go find a surfer from downtown Santa Cruz to guide him, he went and found an experienced guide who had climbed it 800 times. During the ascent, Greg put his feet where the guide had lain his, because he knew that the guide was going to reach the top.

Greg Reid, American Hat Makers, San Diego (3)

This mindset is exactly how he approaches his business life. He goes directly to the source and surrounds himself with the people who are producing the results he desires. Greg says that while there is a formula or pattern to becoming a successful entrepreneur, each day it changes. The environment you’re in will be ever-changing, but the business fundamentals will stay the same.

16473687_10154983265514458_8493888114983359090_n[1]

When asked about what his motivation was, he said that it also changes daily. What drives you today will change tomorrow. Happiness and success are moving targets, and you’ll need to revamp your approach daily to achieve either.

Greg Reid, American Hat Makers, San Diego (5)

To visualize all of the little things that help people achieve happiness, Greg started a movement called The Secret of Happiness. This website is a database where anyone can submit what made them happy today, and is just another way Greg is helping to spread goodwill around the world. One of Greg’s inspirations is his dear friend, Frank Shankwitz, founder of the Make-a-Wish foundation. One day, Greg asked Frank, “After granting so many children’s wishes, what is your wish?” Frank said that he very much desired to have his story told in a way that he could share with his grand-kids. After hearing this, Greg took on the responsibility of producing a feature film, titled Wishman, detailing Frank’s life story and his journey creating the Make-a-Wish foundation. Greg believed that it was time to give back to someone who has given so much. Having the resources to organize such an undertaking is Greg’s definition of success. He desires to spread the touching story of Frank, and his lifestyle has given him the freedom to do so.

The most important nugget of wisdom you should take away from this article is about seeking counsel. To get the results you desire, go directly to the source and learn from those who have paved the way before you! The Myth of Finding the Perfect Hat

Just as the shopkeeper told Harry Potter, “The wand chooses the wizard…” so does the hat choose you!

It is not an unusual occurrence that someone will come into the shop and say they are “just looking” and don’t want our help. But they go on to try on hat after hat, looking for the “right one” while our sales person is standing by, hat in hand, waiting patiently.

You see, our sales people are trained hat whisperers, and they know how to listen. They can see the customer’s energy and can listen to which hat is calling to them.

dsc_0420052915

Beth Watrous helping customers pick their perfect hat.

Our sales people may ask you a few questions to help narrow your options, such as:

  • Is this hat for everyday wear or a special occasion?
  • What kind of music do you like to listen to?

Meanwhile, they are checking out your vibe, your style – do you seem to like attention, want to me noticed? Or perhaps you are more subtle, want to hang back a bit?

No matter what your style, from Steampunk to Outback, we have got your topper!

There is an art to picking the right hat – one that creates symmetry and brings balance to your face.

The right hat complements the features you have, accentuating the positive and creating harmony.

jamie-foxx-annalise-bishop-american-hat-makers-wisdom-hat-hugging

Jamie Foxx and his daughter Annalise Bishop wearing the Wisdom

If you have a round face, a flat bill may make your face look rounder, so you may want to avoid that style. Tilt your hat back a bit, if it is tilted forward your face may look shorter.

ashbury-summit-madisonhu-la

Madison Hu wearing a Summit

If your face is longer, pick a hat that will shorten the appearance of your face. Perhaps a Fedora, jauntily tilted to the side?

ashbury-summit-drakebell-la-2

Drake Bell wearing the Summit

If you are like me and have a square face, well then, that wide brim might be calling to you. Pick a hat with some curve to it to soften the hard angles.

doubleg-cyclone-brandoneaton-la

Brando Eaton wearing a Cyclone

The right hat can make all the difference – it can bring you to the forefront or give you a quiet confidence.

dsc_0696

It can also transport you to another realm completely, so tread carefully, and trust the hat!

Hannah Bertollini Watrous

One of the first things you notice about Hannah Bertollini Watrous is the warmth of her smile. Most likely the second will be the warmth of her hug, because whether she is meeting you for the first, or fifty-first, time she will greet you like you are a long lost friend.

hannah-1

Its that open joy that drives Hannahs work as the Global Brand Marketing Manager for Watsonville-based American Hat Makers.  Hannah is an integral piece of the family business (Husband Garth is the son of Founder Gary Watrous), whose mission is, Having fun, laughing often, and honoring everyone’s unique strengths.

13921040_10155150611219460_4272381649331964332_n

When I first met Hannah it was not long after American Hat Makers had moved into their large warehouse near the Watsonville airport. What began as a one-man operation in her father-in-laws garage over 40 years ago has since grown to employ 50 positive and fun loving people who work together to produce the finest, most striking, handmade leather hats in the world.

13723874_1163748297016676_2056713270581603043_o

As Global Brand Marketing Manager, Hannah is tasked with promoting several unique brands under the American Hat Makers umbrella. This is no small task, as each line has its own distinct personality. Her work takes her all over the country, from the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, to high-end trade shows in Las Vegas and New York.

My BertolliniGirls .JPG

Regardless of how many miles she is logging, Hannahs priority is family first and foremost. I love that my beautiful daughters (Gianna, 23 and Leilani, 16) have the courage to follow their dreams, take risks, and fall short. They both love deeply, are knowledgeable, athletic, nurturing, humorous, and part of the next generation of entrepreneurs who will make a difference in our community, she said.

dsc_0052As far as her marriage is concerned, Hannah clearly loves working with her husband Garth as much as she loves him. We really complement each other. Im proud of the fact that we work so hard on our relationship so that our girls are able to see what a healthy relationship looks like – to be respected, loved, and enjoy life to the fullest!”

Clean and sober for over 18 years, Hannah is now addicted to living life fully present and finding love and laughter in every day. Her dedication to enjoying life is evident in every aspect of her being. With her guidance, American Hat Makers dedicates as much to the fulfillment of their employees as they do to making amazing hats. She and Garth mentor employees, provide monthly themed breakfasts and lunches and Keep it Weird days (where everyone dresses up and laughter and smiles abound!) They work to encourage each and every employee to become their highest selves and fulfill their dreams.

One of the things Hannah feels most strongly about is helping the community. I know we are fortunate to live a charmed life and it feels exceptionally good for my family to be able to give to those in need.

Whether it is through American Hat Makersannual Hat Day in the Sun event, where they give away hundreds of hats and educate the community about protecting their faces from the sun, or by gifting beanies and socks to the homeless each winter through their Headwear for the Homeless campaign, Hannah knows it is through giving that we receive much more.

I used to really worry about what others thought of me,she said.  Now I feel incredible knowing I work hard at keeping my side of the street clean and discovering how I can be the best me, and finding ways to impact our world in a positive way. There’s not a doubt in my mind that I can make a difference. I have an abundance of Faith in the outcome.IMG_0625.jpg

She is deeply involved in the art community through her work with Pivot; The Art of Fashion and explores her avant-garde creative side by creating Wearable Art and mentoring teens through FashionTEENS Santa Cruz.

“I love creating very unique pieces that makes one wonder what is that made out of? whether it be a dress, jumpsuit, hat or headpiece,” she said.

I was surprised to learn that Ruby considers herself “kinda shy” because she really does have a big, sparkly personality, just like the wearable art she creates. She is known for her gorgeous, often blinged-out, leather cuffs. (You may well know someone who has been “cuffed” by her – I know I have been!)

It makes sense that, as a designer and stylist, Ruby feels more comfortable behind the scenes, even though she doesn’t fade into the background herself at all.

“I’m very proud of myself for never turning down a challenge. I push myself to think and design outside of the box,” she said.

Her latest challenge has been designing hats for Watsonville-based American Hat Makers Ruby Roxanne Designs and American Hat Makers have joined forces to get their hats seen in the world of high-fashion, and guess what? They are making it happen!

“I didn’t really think I could do it [design hats], but with the encouragement and support of Garth & Hannah Watrous  – plus the incredible production team –  we came out with a collection of amazing hats,” Ruby said.

And that quest to get their hats seen in the high-fashion world? Well, it’s happening. The hats were featured on the runway at New York Fashion Week for Tumbler & Tipsy and a gold metallic top hat Ruby designed was featured on the cover of Lux-PR Magazine.

But that is really just the beginning. “I am super excited to announce my new venture with American Hat Makers,” Ruby shared.  “Ruby Roxanne Head Couture is a luxury high end wearable art collection of gorgeous hats and head pieces that will make anyone who wears them become ART!”

When I asked Ruby what the keys to her success are she didn’t hesitate, “Having an open mind,” she said. “If I hadn’t been open to working with Garth and Hannah and American Hat Makers I wouldn’t be on this new path.”

It looks like a path to the runway to me!
