The Headwear Association 111th Annual Dinner

Originally founded in 1908 in New York City, The Headwear Association is the oldest trade association in the fashion industry, and is dedicated to promoting hats and the headwear industry throughout the world, and to foster goodwill and fellowship among those engaged in the headwear industry.

This year’s dinner is a bit of a special time for not just us here at American Hat Makers, but for everyone at the Headwear Association. Garth’s term as president has come to an end, and at tonight’s dinner we are passing the torch to Gerry Miller Jr.

“Serving as president has been an ultimate honor”, says Garth. “Being able to usher new business relationships and do my part to drive the hat industry to new heights has been such a gift.”

The night went so splendidly. Naturally, we started with the business end of things, and to unwind after that we had a little cocktail hour. After that, we had a wonderful fashion show featuring all of the new styles that everyone is testing out. It was absolutely amazing!

Seeing all the gorgeous outfits made us quite hungry, and we ate a fabulous dinner to prep us for the awards show. Retailer of the Year went to Hatsational!

The Ben Rosenthal Award went to Douglas Highsmith of Dorfman Pacific hat company.

The Lieberman Award went to the one and only Garth Watrous of American Hat Makers.

And finally, the Fit Scholarship went to Marisa Belfiore.

Business Highlight: Chapel Hats

Chapel Hats is a nationwide chain of high-end hat stores that is dedicated to providing a fun environment in which the consumer can find a hat that’s perfect for them. Every Chapel Hats store has a story to tell. An interesting fact about Chapel Hats is that they partner with architectural salvage companies to reclaim wood and iron to build the shelves, tables and cash counters used in their stores. Each store is built on history with the use of old pieces, and salvage from old shops, factories, schools, pubs, churches, etc. When you step foot in any of their shops you will be taken to a different time period!

Chapel’s Chinook location.

We first got involved with Chapel Hats 6 years ago at a Las Vegas trade show. John Mckernan, owner and founder of Chapel Hats, came into our booth and remarked at how much he loved our Steampunk Hatter line. We instantly hit it off! John is honest, open, and willing to try new things, which is one of the core values we employ here at American Hat Makers. John is a knowledgeable buyer who is dedicated to the organic growth of his company and isn’t in a rush when it comes to the way he runs his business. The values he employs in his company insures that he does not get too big too fast and lose touch with his clientele.

John is well known among hat enthusiasts for the impact his chain of shops has had on the hat world. By making high end, high quality hats more widely available to the public, a resurgence of hat styles has been started. Each location has a wide variety of styles in order to cater to a larger demographic. Chapel hats has a reputation for stocking new and cutting edge styles that keep them ahead of the curve when it comes to fashion.

The Decline of the Hat in American Culture

Hats have been a staple of fashion and elegance for millennia. Glance over any picture of a crowd in the early 1900’s and you’d have a hard time finding anyone hat-less! Leaving your house without your hat was comparable to going to work without your pants! So what caused such a popular and widely used accessory to be phased out? During the early 1900’s, a renaissance of self-grooming habits arose which saw the first commercially released PH-Balanced shampoo. This discovery promoted showing off your hair, which would require leaving your hat at home. A May 1908 printing of the New York Times contained an article detailing the processes and benefits of shampooing, saying that hair that is “soft and glossy in appearance and texture” was of utmost desirability, thus encouraging many people to embrace these new hat-less style trends.shampoo

At the start of WWII, any non-essential resource or material was redirected for the wartime effort. This disrupted the availability of many of the materials necessary for the production of different hat styles. Fashion had to respond accordingly, and many man-made materials and alternative processes were developed to replace the scarce resources. Although millinery itself was unrestricted by law, due to extreme rationing, hats became largely unavailable simply due to the fact that they were not a necessary item. Average citizens could not justify using precious rationing coupons on something as frivolous as a hat. Men returning from war had just endured five years of regulated uniforms which did not include hats, and many were not eager to resume wearing them when they returned and simply hung up their helmets and abandoned head wear entirely.

dwight_eisenhower_troops

Years after the end of WWII,  President Dwight D. Eisenhower became a key player in the implementation of a national interstate highway system. His experiences during the 1919 Motor Transport Corps convoy, which was a long distance military convoy that traveled roughly 3000 miles from Washington D.C using the Lincoln Highway, gave him the knowledge necessary to design an effective transport system across the country. While serving as an allied general, he gained an appreciation for Germany’s Reichsautobahn system which was the early version of today’s Autobahn. Eisenhower noted at how quickly a central highway system could be used to deploy troops and resources necessary to combat an invasion or provide relief for an emergency.

With the implementation of a national highway system, transport in America shifted from bustling, cramped, public transport to using personal automobiles made available by companies such as Chevrolet and Ford. This shift from public to private transit is probably the most to blame for the decline in hats. When using public transit, a large portion of time is spent enduring the elements, whether walking to the bus station or sitting on a bench waiting for the bus to arrive. The unpredictability of the elements made it smart to wear an outfit that could be used in various weather conditions. Therefore, no outfit would be complete without a hat. As more and more citizens made the change to private transit, time spent outside while traveling dwindled greatly. This, coupled with the diminished headroom inside of the average car cabin, made it almost an inconvenience to wear a hat. 1348488portrait-of-former-president-dwight-eisenhower-wearing-cowboy-hat-on-his-190-acre-farm-posters
Presidents and hats have a very storied history.President  John F. Kennedy’s inaugurational speech was the first ever to be broadcast to the nation in color. Coming only about 15 years after the first televised presidential speech, the importance of this event was not lost to the public. Wearing a hat to inauguration was commonplace, and even somewhat regarded as tradition. President John F. Kennedy shook this tradition and ditched his top hat after the first few sentences of his inaugural speech.

The impact of this gesture was noticed largely by the young baby boomers, who wished to resist the conformity of their parents and pave their own way. This decision is most widely regarded as the single most impactful event pertaining to the popularity of wearing hats, although the significance was probably increased due to various other social factors at that time.

kennedy450

As time went on, more and more radical hairstyles developed and the use of hair products continued to rise, with 1964 seeing hairspray as the top-selling beauty product. Rather than being decimated by the actions of one man, the hat was metaphorically hung up due to a rise in youth culture in the 1960’s and the suppression of formality in all areas of life.

We have covered so many celebrity heads and Jamie Foxx was an amazing addition to our list. We met him at the GBK Gifting Suite: Oscars held at the London Hotel West Hollywood at Beverly Hills. It was a amazing having him walk down the wall with excitement and say “Ohh look at the hats!”

Jamie Foxx Summit Ashbury Hats American Hat Makers

He came into our booth with his daughter, Annalise Bishop. Annalise fell in love with the Wisdom hat, designed by Adam Rose for American Hat Makers. Soon Jamie had a matching Wisdom hat on and he started flapping his arms like he was an owl. He was so thrilled and had a ginormous smile on his face.

Then he started trying on different hats and with each hat he portrayed a different personality and pose. We where so honored to witness his excitement for our hats. “What great product!, I love these hats!, their amazing!”.

Jamie left with a Summit hat. Annalise left our booth with a Wisdom hat that she didn’t take off the whole night.

The Wisdom Hat that Annalise took home and Jamie tried on is not just an Owl Hat. Designed by Adam Rose owner of Fallen Owl Tattoo Studio in Denver here is the story behind the “Wisdom” or as most call it the “Owl Hat”.

American Hat Makers continue to push creativity and design in the world of hat making. It’s a joint collaboration from their exceptional team to create/sew/assemble that has been etched by designer Adam Rose. The Team then cuts leather and sews into a top hat, then airbrushed on leather, laser engrave owl face, assembles eyes/eyelids and feathers to create a masterpiece called the “Wisdom” Owl Hat.

In 2015, American Hat Makers partnered with tattoo artist, Adam Rose. As artist and owner of Fallen Owl Tattoo Studio in Denver all hats in Adam Rose’s line are directly inspired by his tattoos and artwork. Public response to Rose’s initial release was immensely positive and we couldn’t be happier with the results. All hats in Adam’s line are 100% American made, hand painted, and laser etched with the highest quality materials available.

American Hat Makers agreed that for every owl hat sold ( ‘Wisdom’ ), $5.00 will be donated to a charity of Adam’s choice. Nature’s Educators has been another amazing charity cares for and educates the public with non releasable birds of prey. For Fallen Owl it was a perfect fit.

American Hat Makers ships worldwide. To preview the full line go to http://www.americanhatmakers.com  To see more of Adam Rose’s work and inspiration go to http://www.FallenOwlTattoo.com

We where so happy to see Jamie and Annalise be so excited for our new Wisdom hat. For us it’s always exciting to see a hat lover be so excited about our hats, especially if it’s Jamie Fox.
