Hannah Bertollini Watrous

One of the first things you notice about Hannah Bertollini Watrous is the warmth of her smile. Most likely the second will be the warmth of her hug, because whether she is meeting you for the first, or fifty-first, time she will greet you like you are a long lost friend.

hannah-1

Its that open joy that drives Hannahs work as the Global Brand Marketing Manager for Watsonville-based American Hat Makers.  Hannah is an integral piece of the family business (Husband Garth is the son of Founder Gary Watrous), whose mission is, Having fun, laughing often, and honoring everyone’s unique strengths.

13921040_10155150611219460_4272381649331964332_n

When I first met Hannah it was not long after American Hat Makers had moved into their large warehouse near the Watsonville airport. What began as a one-man operation in her father-in-laws garage over 40 years ago has since grown to employ 50 positive and fun loving people who work together to produce the finest, most striking, handmade leather hats in the world.

As Global Brand Marketing Manager, Hannah is tasked with promoting several unique brands under the American Hat Makers umbrella. This is no small task, as each line has its own distinct personality. Her work takes her all over the country, from the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, to high-end trade shows in Las Vegas and New York.

Regardless of how many miles she is logging, Hannahs priority is family first and foremost. I love that my beautiful daughters (Gianna, 23 and Leilani, 16) have the courage to follow their dreams, take risks, and fall short. They both love deeply, are knowledgeable, athletic, nurturing, humorous, and part of the next generation of entrepreneurs who will make a difference in our community, she said.

dsc_0052As far as her marriage is concerned, Hannah clearly loves working with her husband Garth as much as she loves him. We really complement each other. Im proud of the fact that we work so hard on our relationship so that our girls are able to see what a healthy relationship looks like – to be respected, loved, and enjoy life to the fullest!”

Clean and sober for over 18 years, Hannah is now addicted to living life fully present and finding love and laughter in every day. Her dedication to enjoying life is evident in every aspect of her being. With her guidance, American Hat Makers dedicates as much to the fulfillment of their employees as they do to making amazing hats. She and Garth mentor employees, provide monthly themed breakfasts and lunches and Keep it Weird days (where everyone dresses up and laughter and smiles abound!) They work to encourage each and every employee to become their highest selves and fulfill their dreams.

One of the things Hannah feels most strongly about is helping the community. I know we are fortunate to live a charmed life and it feels exceptionally good for my family to be able to give to those in need.

Whether it is through American Hat Makersannual Hat Day in the Sun event, where they give away hundreds of hats and educate the community about protecting their faces from the sun, or by gifting beanies and socks to the homeless each winter through their Headwear for the Homeless campaign, Hannah knows it is through giving that we receive much more.

I used to really worry about what others thought of me,she said.  Now I feel incredible knowing I work hard at keeping my side of the street clean and discovering how I can be the best me, and finding ways to impact our world in a positive way. There’s not a doubt in my mind that I can make a difference. I have an abundance of Faith in the outcome.IMG_0625.jpg

Ruby Roxanne Agresta

Ruby Roxanne Agresta is a powerhouse. She is one of those women you meet and later ask yourself, “How does she do it…and how do I get some of that energy?”

x-1

Not only does Ruby have a successful business as the creator of Ruby Roxanne Designs leather jewelry and hats, she has been married for 11 years to her handsome husband Jim, and together they raise three beautiful children in Scotts Valley.

10502440_10206409574457342_3725223711384040729_n

She is deeply involved in the art community through her work with Pivot; The Art of Fashion and explores her avant-garde creative side by creating Wearable Art and mentoring teens through FashionTEENS Santa Cruz.

“I love creating very unique pieces that makes one wonder what is that made out of? whether it be a dress, jumpsuit, hat or headpiece,” she said.

14572311_10153711645156739_6125626297192480915_n

I was surprised to learn that Ruby considers herself “kinda shy” because she really does have a big, sparkly personality, just like the wearable art she creates. She is known for her gorgeous, often blinged-out, leather cuffs. (You may well know someone who has been “cuffed” by her – I know I have been!)

12932899_10207089349211286_3245908802191406937_n

It makes sense that, as a designer and stylist, Ruby feels more comfortable behind the scenes, even though she doesn’t fade into the background herself at all.

“I’m very proud of myself for never turning down a challenge. I push myself to think and design outside of the box,” she said.

Her latest challenge has been designing hats for Watsonville-based American Hat Makers Ruby Roxanne Designs and American Hat Makers have joined forces to get their hats seen in the world of high-fashion, and guess what? They are making it happen!

dsc_0141

“I didn’t really think I could do it [design hats], but with the encouragement and support of Garth & Hannah Watrous  – plus the incredible production team –  we came out with a collection of amazing hats,” Ruby said.

dsc_0694

And that quest to get their hats seen in the high-fashion world? Well, it’s happening. The hats were featured on the runway at New York Fashion Week for Tumbler & Tipsy and a gold metallic top hat Ruby designed was featured on the cover of Lux-PR Magazine.

But that is really just the beginning. “I am super excited to announce my new venture with American Hat Makers,” Ruby shared.  “Ruby Roxanne Head Couture is a luxury high end wearable art collection of gorgeous hats and head pieces that will make anyone who wears them become ART!”

dsc_0904

When I asked Ruby what the keys to her success are she didn’t hesitate, “Having an open mind,” she said. “If I hadn’t been open to working with Garth and Hannah and American Hat Makers I wouldn’t be on this new path.”

It looks like a path to the runway to me!

How to use a hat cone!

Using a Hat Cone is an important part of keeping your hat in proper condition! Over time, a hat resting unsupported on a surface will lose the valuable style on the brim. To prevent this, there is a wonderful device called a hat cone!

The durable plastic cone has adjustable Velcro tabs in the back that will shrink or expand the cone to match the size of your hat. To use it, simply adjust it to a size suitable for your hat and place it on a level surface! Now you never have to worry about your hat losing it’s style again! You can check out these hat cones on our website. Hope this has been helpful!

Step by step tour through LASER ENGRAVING!

The Draco is a top seller in the Steampunk Hatter brand and it’s easy to see why!
With beautiful engraved detailing and shading matched with luminous airbrushed colors the Draco stands out and is a perfect example of what makes our laser engraving process so important, which is why it will be the design we follow through the process today!

20161213_101405

Step 1, Original Drawing:
Sketch out your original design onto paper the size of the hat crown this will insure that none of the design will be cut off in the finished product. Once you have a design you are happy with, the design gets inked in with a fine tip black pen and the remaining pencil marks get erased.
20161213_101405ai

Step 2, Computer Editing:
The completed ink drawing is scanned into the computer and opened in the editing program, Corel Draw. There, the design is cleaned up and modified to be read by the laser engraver.

20161213_101411
Step 3, Parts:
What kind of leather will the design be printed on? Every kind of leather engraves and cuts differently, so it is important to test on scraps. Have parts dye cut out of the desired leather to engrave on.

20161213_101419
Step 4, Airbrushing:
Not all of our laser engraved hats get airbrushed but the majority do. When the parts are airbrushed it makes the contrast and pop more than a hat without it. Airbrushing also gives us colors we never had the ability to create before. Some hats have up to 6 different colors and many airbrushed hats have custom templates to help the airbrushing be more precise.

20161213_101427
Step 5, Engraving:
Now that you have all of the parts and the design ready in the computer, you are ready to print. All of the speed and power settings are programmed in the Corel Draw and then sent to the laser engraver. Line up your parts in the machine, press print and watch the magic happen!

20161213_101436
Step 6, Production:
Last but not least, all of the finished parts are sewn together into a one of a kind, handmade hat!

draco-steampunk-dragon-backgroundThe Draco
“How sharper than a serpent’s tooth…?” From the depths of time itself comes an all-leather masterpiece of fierce design and regal pedigree. Our Draco asks nothing more from its wearer than 100% boldness, as that’s what it presents to the world. Hand-worked dragon-scale pattern, scalloped leather band, powerful wing accent and serpentine eye all come together to speak of battles yet to win and skies to seek aloft. Available in black and brown, to match almost any mood, the Draco is a solid beauty. Water-treated, like our other offerings; however the wing itself holds its shape best when kept as dry as the dragon’s breath. Buy the Draco today, wear it to your next gathering, and utter not a sound. Let this beauty do the roaring for you.

Photographer Spotlight – Neil Simmons

Neil Simmons is a photographer with a flair for life that shows up in his work. With a background in both business and photography (as a double-major at San Jose State University), fueled by a true affinity for the art of making pictures, Simmons exemplifies what it means to be a risen star in the field of professional photography. Raised in Santa Cruz County, Simmons lives close to many of his favorite photogenic spots, but he also makes a point of traveling to study other parts of California and the West, enjoying the challenge of getting the shots he wants while on the road. The world around him, shimmering and rippling with ever-changing light, provides Simmons with the materials he needs to be inspired and productive. An avid surfer and snowboarder, Simmons enjoys being out in natural settings sharing the activities he loves most with his wife and two children.

dsc_0667

We at American Hat Makers have had the pleasure and privilege to work with local photographer, Neil Simmons for around 2 years and we could not be happier with not only the quality of his work but the positive and productive attitude he brings to every photo shoot.
dsc_0786

Neil shows skill and experience in being able to always get the best out of his models, another challenge to any photo shoot, but it hardly seems like a challenge when Neil is consistently capturing beautiful locations without taking attention from the models who always look and embody the genuine feeling of the picture for a perfect balance in every image.
IMG_5419.jpg
Neil is known for his eye, if you are planning on doing a shoot with Neil be on your toes when it comes to location! Neil’s artistic edge kicks in when it comes to finding every possible shot for the most variety possible in every location and trust us, you won’t be disappointed with the results!

Neil’s hard work has paid off bringing a new sense of life to the American Hat Maker brands, giving a clear division of the brands using specific setting and mood in a way we didn’t think was possible, so thank you Neil for these years together and we hope to continue growing together for more years to come!

While we were there we had the chance to meet the talented Gilles Marini! Marini is a french-american actor known for his roles in the film Sex and the City and in the television shows Brother and Sister and Switched at Birth. After working as a baker in his father’s bakery since he was eight years old and high school, he joined the French army and was stationed in Paris, where he served as a fireman in the Paris Fire Brigade. It was in Paris where Marini met Fred Goudon, a photographer who introduced him to the world of modeling.

He began his career as a model in his early twenties. After fulfilling his military duties, he went to the United States to learn English while working as a model.  One of his first jobs was a television commercial for Bud Light beer. He made his acting debut at the age of 29, in the 2005 horror flick Screech of the Decapitated.

We also had a chance to chat with Jimmy Jean-Louis! Jimmy Jean-Louis is a Haitian actor and model best known for his role as “the Haitian” on the NBC television series Heroes. Jean-Louis was born in Petionville, near Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He lived there until the age of twelve, when he moved to Paris with his family to pursue a modeling career, after moving he experienced a culture shock because of the rural to city lifestyle change. He enrolled in business courses, but quickly realized that his heart lay in performance, and studied at the Académie Internationale de la Danse. His parents returned to Haiti, but Jean-Louis and his brother remained in Paris.

Around a decade later in 1991, producers discovered Jean-Louis during one of his dancing stints in a French club, who were impressed. They tapped him to appear in a Coca-Cola advertisement, the success of which prompted the Jean-Louis to spend several years modeling across Europe. He was very successful in London, working for such notables as Gianfranco Ferre and Valentino. Before finding success as a model, he was homeless at times in Paris. By the mid-’90s, he was gracing music videos by such stars as Mariah Carey, Seal, and George Michael, and appearing in low-budget “independent” films in Los Angeles.

He appeared in such films as Balls Out: Gary the Tennis Coach and Alvin and the  Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. He played Vince Blake in Zoey 101. It was a pleasure to meet Naomi Grossman! Naomi Grossman is an American actress, writer, and producer best known for her role as Pepper in the second and fourth seasons of the FX horror television series American Horror Story. Not knowing what role she was auditioning for, Grossman sent in an audition for American Horror Story: Asylum in mid-2012 and was cast in soon after as Pepper; the season premiered later that year on October 17. In preparation for the role, she shaved her head bald. In 2014, it was revealed that Grossman would return to the series in its fourth season, American Horror Story: Freak Show, reprising her role as Pepper from the second season, making her the first to play the same role in two different seasons of the show.

Tips from the Hat Experts!

How should I store my hat?
Several American Hat Makers hat styles feature a brim that is sloped downwards, both at the front and the back of the hat, which greatly contributes to the distinctive look of these hat styles. To prevent your hat brim from losing its distinctive contour, it is important that you DO NOT store your hat on a flat surface for any great length of time. For these hat styles, particularly (and any of our hat styles, generally), it is best to store them suspended, instead of on a flat surface. You can suspend your hat on the hat cone that came in the box that your hat was shipped in (portable hat cones can be purchased from our website). In lieu of a hat cone, you can store your hat on a coffee can, or an upturned roll of paper towels (or even a bowling ball).

How can I clean my hat?
There are different methods for cleaning the many different materials used in making American Hat Maker’s hats. It’s best to follow the care and cleaning directions for your specific hat (printed on the label in the hat).

Following are suggestions for cleaning some of the materials used in making American Hat Maker’s hats:

Suede
You can try using a very fine-grained sandpaper to gently sand away the dirt, but be careful to NOT sand where there is thread, as the thread could then come unraveled.

Another option is to purchase a Suede Bar, which (as mentioned on our website) “is perfect for light colored leathers. Takes out oils and soils without the use of water.” A Suede Bar is included as part of our Cleaning Kit, which can be purchased from our website (http://www.headnhome.com/hatstore/accessories_tools/).

cleaning-kit

Finished Leather
To clean finished leather, just using a damp cloth will usually do a very nice job. If you want to do a more extensive cleaning, you can use saddle soap or boot cream.

bic4leatherconditioner_large_1

How should I clean my Cabana?
Our Cabana style hats are made of Nylon and Polyester. They can be hand-washed using a mild detergent (like dish-washing liquid), then air-dried. You can use a brush to scrub stubborn spots. It is best to let your Cabana air-dry suspended on a coffee can or a roll of paper towels (just as you should store it) to maintain the distinctive sloped contour of the brim.

solair-hats-cabana-beaver-a

How should I clean/maintain my Sweat Patches?
One of the great features of an American Hat Maker’s hat is the removable and washable Sweat Patch. When the Sweat Patch becomes saturated, just pull to remove it from the Velcro that holds it in place. Once removed, the Sweat Patch should be hand-washed using a mild detergent (like dishwashing liquid), then air-dried. Once dry, the Sweat Patch can be reattached via the Velcro. IMPORTANT: To prevent perspiration staining of the hat, Sweat Patches should be washed frequently (i.e., whenever the Sweat Patch becomes saturated).

sizer-black-package

How can I get extra Sweat Patches and Size Reducers?
Although our high-quality hats are designed to last forever, our Sweat Patches are not. If you frequently wear your hat (as most of our customers do), the Sweat Patch will eventually need to be replaced. Additional Sweat Patches, as well as Size-Reducers (Full-Size and Half-Size) that will reduce the size of your hat by one full-size or 1 half-size (and serve the double-purpose of also being functional as Sweat Patches), can be purchased from our website at http://www.headnhome.com/hatstore/accessories_tools/

How can I reshape my hat brim?
Several of American Hat Maker’s styles feature a brim that is sloped downwards, both at the front and back of the hat, which greatly contributes to the distinctive look of these hat styles. To prevent your hat brim from losing its distinctive contour, it is important that you DO NOT store your hat on a flat surface for any great length of time. To restore the brim to its distinctive shape, roll the front of the brim downwards into a tight cylindrical shape, then unroll the brim. Repeat the same process on the back of the brim. Repeat the process on both the front and back of the brim as many times as necessary.

Can you refurbish my hat (if so, what refurbishing is done, and how much does it cost)?
American Hat Makers does provide refurbishing of our hats. Refurbishing includes replacing the trim on the brim of the hat, a thorough cleaning, and the cost of shipping your hat back to you (all for only $35.00).

Can I pack my hat in a suitcase? If so, how?
Our Crusher style hats are completely “crushable”, and can be easily wadded up and packed in a suitcase. Some of our other styles (Such as Breeze and Cabana) are also considered “crushable.” To pack either of these style hats in a suitcase, fold the brim up on the sides of the hat (like a taco), lay it on its side and stuff socks inside the crown of the hat so that it doesn’t get squashed flat (It is important to note that, after unpacking your hat, it may not return to its original perfect shape).

What kind of sun-protection do your hats provide?
Our Leathers and suedes not only offer all-season rain protection, but also offer 100% UV protection. With a UPF of over 50 you will not get more sun protection from any headwear this light weight. Our all mesh hats still block out over 80% of the sun’s harmful rays.14462827_1192758154116649_2817357788879361719_n.jpg

How weather resistant are your hats?
Our SolAir and American Outback hats handle weather without any problems. Rain or snow poses no worries for the wearer, and with 100% UV Protection, that applies to sunshine as well!

Are your hats fade resistant?
Although fading is ultimately inevitable , many of our leathers and fabrics have been treated to resist fading due to sun exposure. You can expect a lifetime of performance from our hats.

Are your hats water resistant?
Many of our leathers and fabrics have been treated with water-resisting compounds. Most of our hats shed water like rain off a duck’s back. Though it is not generally necessary, some customers choose to reapply scotch-guard or other chemicals after years of use.

Do your hats shrink?
Our hats are made of only the most durable leathers and do not generally shrink or expand. Leather is an organic material, however, and should be treated with care. Subjecting any leather product to prolonged instances of extreme heat or dryness can have the effect of drying out and shrinking. For this reason, you should avoid storing your hat in the follow places: Closed vehicles on hot days, ovens, fireplaces. etc.

Just how “crushable” are your hats?
Our Crusher style hats are completely “crushable”, and can be easily wadded up and packed in a suitcase. Some of our other styles (e.g., our Breeze and Cabana styles) are also somewhat “crushable.” To pack either of these style hats in a suitcase, fold the brim up on the sides of the hat (like a taco), lay it on its side and stuff socks inside the crown of the hat so that it doesn’t get squashed flat (It is important to note that, after unpacking your hat, it may not return to its original perfect shape).

What are your specific guarantees?
Each hat comes with a Lifetime Guarantee on workmanship and materials. There is also a satisfaction guarantee on anything you order. If it does not meet or exceed your expectations, simply return it within 10 days in new condition for a full refund. Also if the hat you order for yourself or someone else does not fit for any reason you may exchange it for the correct size.

What can I do if my hatband falls off?
Although many of our hatbands are sewn on, some of our hatbands are simply adhered to the hat with contact cement. Our hatbands will usually remain adhered indefinitely, and only on rare occasions will the hatband come loose. If, however, the hatband does come loose, it can be re-adhered with contact cement.

What if I find that the hat I purchased is too small?
If the American Hat Makers hat you purchased is just a little too small, you can try the following procedure for stretching the hat to increase the hat size slightly:

1. Put your knee in the crown of the hat, with the front of the hat facing you.
2. Put your fingers on the inside front of the hat.
3. Pull towards you, while pushing with your knee in the opposite direction.

This trick often works if you just need to stretch the hat slightly, but use caution in applying too much pressure, as you don’t want to destroy your hat.

What is the best way to determine what size of hat I should order?
As hat sizes are somewhat inconsistent throughout the industry (one company’s size 7 ½ could be vastly different from another’s), it would probably be best to measure.

A few tips for correctly finding your head size:
Get a friend’s help! It makes it easier.

You should measure the circumference of your head half way up your forehead and one finger’s width above your ears. Pull the tape to about the tightness you would like to wear a hat (you can use a string and then measure it if you don’t have a tape), but put a finger between the tape and your head to allow for a little room (it’s best not to measure with just the tape measure pulled tight around your head, or you might end up getting a hat that is too tight). Take this measurement 3 times or until you get a consistent reading.

Once you have a consistent measurement, you can view the Size Chart on our website (http://www.headnhome.com/size.php) to determine which size hat to order.

Can I exchange the hat I purchased for a different hat (if so, how)?
If you are dissatisfied with your hat purchase for any reason (e.g., wrong size, wrong style, wrong color), you may certainly exchange your hat for a different hat.

To expedite processing of your return, please go to our website (http://www.headnhome.com/returns.php) and fill out a return form. It’s important that you include any pertinent information with your return, such as your Return Shipping Address, and the reason for the return. Be sure to also include the color, size, and style of the hat you are returning (as well as the color, size, and style of the hat you want to exchange it for).

How do I install a chinstrap on one of your hats that I have?
If your hat has a mesh crown, you can simply string the chinstrap through the mesh. First, poke 1 hole on each side of the seam at the back of the crown, making sure that the holes are large enough to accommodate passing the chinstrap through them (it’s best to use something with a tapered tip, like a pen or pencil, but a metal awl works best). Second, push the ends of the chinstrap through the 2 holes (from inside to outside). Next, poke 2 more holes (one on the right side, and one on the left side) in the middle of the crown, just above the hatband. Then, push the ends of the chinstrap through the 2 holes (from outside to inside). Finally, push both ends of the chinstrap (one at a time works best) through the adjusting bead to complete the installation.
