Well, it’s just about that time! My tenure as President of the Headwear Association is winding to an end. It has been an absolute honor and blessing to be part of such an amazing organization. I’m so thankful for the opportunity to serve this term as president, and I am looking forward to many more years of the Headwear Association honoring all of us in the hat world. I want to congratulate Gerry Miller for becoming the next President of this fine association, and all of us here at American Hat Makers look forward to seeing the new heights to which Gerry will take us!

Sincerely, Garth Watrous

Check out Chapel Hats! You won’t regret it!

Chapel Hats is one of many fantastic companies we have the absolute pleasure of partnering with, and recently they sent in some pictures of their beautiful locations and the great way they showcase our hats! American Hat Makers is honored to be displayed in the 16 unique Chapel Hats stores, which are located all over the world. They pride themselves on working with architectural salvage companies in order to use materials such as reclaimed wood and iron to build their shelving, cash wrap stations, tables, and more! No Chapel Hats store will look alike. Interestingly, their first location was primarily built using salvaged wood from a vintage church, which gives them the perfect name!  All of their locations also prominently feature antiques in their displays like hat boxes, old radios, phonographs and tons of other interesting pieces to showcase all of the styles they carry. The team at Chapel Hats is always such pleasure to work with, and the energy they have at each of their wonderful locations means that you will always have a remarkable experience when you visit. Check out all of the awesome ways they display our hats below! CaptureCapture2Capture3Capture4Capture5Capture6Capture7Capture8Capture9Capture10Capture11Capture12Capture13Capture14Capture15Capture16Capture17

Chris Hat Day in the Sun 2016 Highlight American Hat Makers JPG

One of the highlights of the day was meeting Chris from Aptos. He had heard about our event while he was at his dermatologist’s getting a cancerous growth removed. While he was in the waiting room he saw a postcard announcing Hat Day in the Sun and he decided to come check it out. After such a health scare, he was thrilled to receive a quality hat that could stand up to the sun and heat and still keep him protected.

Thank you Kathleen Rooney, RN.LE. for volunteering last year

Kathleen Rooney, RN.LE. volunteered her time to hand out sunscreen and lip balm and talk about the importance of sun protection with all of our visitors. Thank you Kathleen and Palo Alto Medical Foundation’s Santa Cruz Dermatology Group!
ATTENTION ALL DERMATOLOGISTS/SKINCARE PROFESSIONALS! We’re really interested in providing skin screenings at future Hat Day in the Sun events, so if you would be able to donate your time to provide a necessary service to the community please contact us so we can coordinate!

According to Hannah Watrous, Director of Global Marketing and Branding for American Hat Makers (and organizer of the event), “It wasn’t about giving away free hats. It was about educating our kids about the dangers of skin cancer– really relevant in a beach community.”
One thing we love doing here at American Hat Makers is staying connected through the use of press tours! Here we’ve attached photos from our previous press tours and we look forward to stopping by your facilities sometime next week to gift you a hat to keep you safe from the suns harmful rays! If any of your wonderful staff would like a free hat, tell them to stop by on the day of the event! #PressTour

Here’s a recap of our 2014 event!

Did you know skin cancer is the most common of all cancers? The fact is 90% of all skin cancers are caused by over-exposure to the sun.

The good news is there are many things you can do to decrease your exposure to the sun, and reduce the possibility for skin cancer.

Here are a few top tips to protect your skin that you can start today!

  • WEAR A HAT! You can purchase an American made leather hat here.
  • Seek out the shade between the hottest part of the day 10am-4pm
  • Do not burn, and avoid tanning and UV tanning booths
  • Wear lip balm with sunscreen everyday
  • Cover up with clothing — breathable long-sleeved shirts and pants are best
  • Wear large UV-blocking sunglasses
  • Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher even on foggy days
  • For outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher
  • Apply 1 ounce of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating
  • Keep newborns out of the sun, and use sunscreen on babies over the age of six months
  • Examine your skin each month from head to toe and make note of any abnormal growths or moles
  • Schedule a yearly skin exam with your physician or dermatologists
  • Keep sunscreen in the car – for long car trips
  • Use extra sunscreen near water, snow, and sand – these surfaces reflect the intensity of UV rays
  • Buy extra bottles of sunscreen and keep in gym bag, trunk, diaper bag and purse
  • Lightly spray sunscreen in your hair or on head for extra protection

Single Contour and Double Contour bands. What’s the difference?

Here at American Hat Makers, we offer a wide range of Hat Bands to accompany our hats. We offer some of our hat styles un-banded, which gives you the option to choose your own band from the various options we offer, or to make your own and make your hat truly unique! There is one key difference between the different bands we offer. Depending on the style of hat you have, you’ll need either a Single Contour or Double Contour band.

FullSizeRender-1

A double contour crown with a double contour band.

Virtually any other hat company offers their hats utilizing a single contour design. For some of our hats, such as the Cyclone, the Silverado, and any of our fedora styles, there is only one contour around the crown, so you would need a Single Contour band.

The Cyclone (Single Contour)

For our top hat styles, such as an El Dorado or a Coachman, and our outdoor styles such as a Crusher or a Breeze, the crown features two contours instead of one. This gives the hat a more exaggerated style, and causes to hat to flow around the ears rather than going straight across your head. These styles would need a Double Contour band.

How did Hats for American Heroes start?

fullsizeoutput_b413

Our latest venture in philanthropy, Hats for American Heroes is the result of one simple question. One evening, Garth and Hannah Watrous and their daughter Leilani were having a typical family dinner. Throughout the course of conversation, Leilani brought up a very important question. Why is it that when servicemen and women return from their service, they seem to be forgotten and their selfless acts left unacknowledged? After hearing this, the Watrous’s have set out to do anything and everything they can to give back to those who have given everything.

Garth and Hannah were awarded Challenge Coins to commemorate their efforts towards veterans.

They contacted American Dream U to inquire about any ways that they could be of service to our veterans. American Dream U is a non-profit dedicated to helping our military get the education and access to resources they need to find their dream job or to start a business of their own. American Dream U then invited Garth and Hannah to Washington D.C where they were given the opportunity to tour the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and later attend an event put on by American Dream U where Garth had the opportunity to speak in front of a captivated audience of veterans, discussing entrepreneurial advice and aspects of business. Afterward, Garth and Hannah insured that each and every veteran was able to walk away with a hat of their choice.

Genuine American Hero: Steve Viola

It’s not too often we hear stories of true, genuine American heroes. Command Master Chief Navy SEAL Steve Viola is one such hero. He’s a man that has seen just about everything and overcome every variety of challenge that life has posed him with. Overcoming these issues, Steve says, is all about how you approach them.

There’s two ways to do something. The right way, or again. In Steve’s eyes, failures are not a bad thing. They are instead an opportunity to learn and improve. It’s all about humbleness. The ability to analyze and learn from your mistakes is what separates the achievers from those who merely try. Although highly decorated, Steve’s path to heroism was not without obstacles. Initially, Steve desired to do a 2 year service and return to college, however during his term a friend convinced him to attend BUD/S or Basic Underwater Demolitions/SEAL training. After a grueling 6 weeks of SEAL training, Steve failed the running test by only two seconds. Determined to prove himself, he returned 6 months later, only to fail the water treading test. You know what they say, the third time’s the charm. After finally passing BUD/S, Steve was deployed in the Gulf War. Sometime during his service, he was recommended to attend the Green Beret Medic School. During his attendance there, he failed the final exam by only a few points. This meant he had to repeat the course from day 1. Steve doesn’t look at the setbacks as detrimental however, instead viewing them as beneficial. Steve says that repeating all of the training for BUD/S and the Green Beret Medic School only made him better at it because he had been practicing it for so long.

Steve says that your failures do not define you. He comes from a community where the difficult is done immediately, and the impossible is done by appointment. Everyone is a work in progress and learning from your mistakes is what gives us the ability to improve ourselves. In his words, his primary mission is to help everyone willing to improve to succeed in life. Take it from someone who’s seen everything and overcome countless adversities, if you have a capable attitude you will see results!
