One of the highlights of the day was meeting Chris from Aptos. He had heard about our event while he was at his dermatologist’s getting a cancerous growth removed. While he was in the waiting room he saw a postcard announcing Hat Day in the Sun and he decided to come check it out. After such a health scare, he was thrilled to receive a quality hat that could stand up to the sun and heat and still keep him protected.
Thank you Kathleen Rooney, RN.LE. for volunteering last year
Kathleen Rooney, RN.LE. volunteered her time to hand out sunscreen and lip balm and talk about the importance of sun protection with all of our visitors. Thank you Kathleen and Palo Alto Medical Foundation’s Santa Cruz Dermatology Group!
ATTENTION ALL DERMATOLOGISTS/SKINCARE PROFESSIONALS! We’re really interested in providing skin screenings at future Hat Day in the Sun events, so if you would be able to donate your time to provide a necessary service to the community please contact us so we can coordinate!
According to Hannah Watrous, Director of Global Marketing and Branding for American Hat Makers (and organizer of the event), “It wasn’t about giving away free hats. It was about educating our kids about the dangers of skin cancer– really relevant in a beach community.”
One thing we love doing here at American Hat Makers is staying connected through the use of press tours! Here we’ve attached photos from our previous press tours and we look forward to stopping by your facilities sometime next week to gift you a hat to keep you safe from the suns harmful rays! If any of your wonderful staff would like a free hat, tell them to stop by on the day of the event! #PressTour

We just got back from the most recent Secret Knock seminar and are in awe of the amount of information we received and the connections we made while we were there! For those that don’t know, Secret Knock is an extremely exclusive, invitation only gathering of entrepreneurs and investors. We met so many amazing individuals while we were there, and learned so many invaluable things that we can apply to our business! Here’s some of the amazing people we got to meet with while there…
Gregory Scott Reid shares the same philosophy with other great leaders “To get what you want in life, simply help others get what they want first.” Mr. Reid created his success by applying real life principals he learned from his Mentors over the years and now travels the country passing along the same great wisdoms so that others may prosper from them as well – What separates Gregory from the masses is rather than speaking from hypothetical theory, he shares his messages based on actual experiences that have made a positive impact in both his personal and business environment, as well as in the lives and corporations of many.
Mark Anthony Bates is probably the best-connected man you’ve never heard of; he travels the globe speaking with elite coaching clients, diplomatic organizations, and world leaders. You won’t find him on social media or on his own web site, he doesn’t promote himself yet his name carries tremendous weight in highly influential circles. As someone who coaches other coaches as well as professional speakers, Mark knows what it takes to make people feel at ease and how to create a connection. When he attends an event he goes in with the intention of genuinely connecting with the people there, not to get anything for himself but to know them and see if an organic relationship develops.

It’s a decision he’s never regretted. Ryan was inspired by the birth of his new son and wanted to provide him with the best possible upbringing, so he went through personal training certification programs and studied bio-mechanics, kinesiology, and health so that he could become a personal fitness trainer. Devon Harris (born 1964) is a Jamaican retired bobsledder and military officer. He was one of the founding members of the Jamaica national bobsled team, which first competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta. Nicknamed “Pele” after the famous football star, Harris went on to compete in the 1992 Winter Olympics and the 1998 Winter Olympics. Harris grew up in the Kingston ghetto of Sunrise Drive in Olympic Gardens (known as “Waterhouse,” or “Firehouse,” because it was a volatile area). A graduate of Drews Ave Primary School, Ardenne High School, and Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Harris had been an avid football player and track and field participant, with his dream being to represent Jamaica in the 1984 Summer Olympics in the 800m and 1500m events. Since the idea for a Jamaican Bobsled Team was pitched to the Jamaica Defence Force, Harris, as a Lieutenant in the Second Battalion, first came across the proposal in a weekly army publication called “Force Orders” in September 1987. The text had called for those who wished to “undergo rigorous and dangerous training” to represent Jamaica in the Winter Olympics. Harris initially thought the idea was ridiculous, but was eventually convinced to participate by his colonel, Lt. Col Eddy Andre . At the team selections, Harris ended up with the fastest push time. Harris returned to the military after Calgary and later became a civilian in 1992 after his second Olympics. He now works as a motivational public speaker and writer. Harris wrote the 2008 children’s book, Yes, I can! : the story of the Jamaican bobsled team, illustrated by Ricardo Cortes.

“Knowledge is power when you put action behind it” –Mark Anthony Bates
“Being criticized is the admission price for creating change” –Greg Reid

Here at American Hat Makers, we offer a wide range of Hat Bands to accompany our hats. We offer some of our hat styles un-banded, which gives you the option to choose your own band from the various options we offer, or to make your own and make your hat truly unique! There is one key difference between the different bands we offer. Depending on the style of hat you have, you’ll need either a Single Contour or Double Contour band.
A single contour crown with a single contour band.
A double contour crown with a double contour band.
Virtually any other hat company offers their hats utilizing a single contour design. For some of our hats, such as the Cyclone, the Silverado, and any of our fedora styles, there is only one contour around the crown, so you would need a Single Contour band.
The Silverado (Single Contour)
The Soho (Single Contour)
The Cyclone (Single Contour)
For our top hat styles, such as an El Dorado or a Coachman, and our outdoor styles such as a Crusher or a Breeze, the crown features two contours instead of one. This gives the hat a more exaggerated style, and causes to hat to flow around the ears rather than going straight across your head. These styles would need a Double Contour band.
The Crusher (Double Contour)
The Breeze (Double Contour)
The El Dorado (Double Contour)
When ordering a hat band on our website, make sure you select which contour option would suit your hat the best, and if you have any questions or concerns you can always give us a call at 1-800-642-3428!
Lately here at American Hat Makers, one of our biggest goals has been designing and attaining all new tip stickers for the inside of our hats. These stickers are meant to carry our name out into the world, and make sure that our hats are marked and noticeable so people know just where they came from! Hannah, our marketing director, spent months going from company to company trying to find a suitable match for manufacturing our tip stickers but to no avail. That is, until we found Star Binding/Printing Company!
Our all new tip sticker design, thanks to Star Printing!
In business for over 103 years, Star Binding/Printing are experts at what they do. Family owned since 1914, and providing exceptional service ever since, it’s very clear that they have made a name for themselves in the printing world. We were so excited when we came across them because we knew we had found our match. They worked with us so diligently in the design of our tip stickers and went to every length to insure that we were satisfied that we couldn’t go on without giving this awesome company a shout out. They said they love working with people in the hat industry because there are so many unique, interesting, and wonderful individuals they come across, and that everyone is so connected with each other! As far as their facility goes, it’s chock-full of original, antiquated equipment that was used since the start of the company. They even have an authentic Thomas Edison Dictaphone from 1878 on display!

2017 has already been a big year for American Hat Makers. On top of all of the fun and success we’ve had, our fearless leader Garth Watrous was just elected President of The Headwear Association!
Originally founded in 1908 in New York City, The Headwear Association is the oldest trade association in the fashion industry, and is dedicated to promoting hats and the headwear industry throughout the world, and to foster goodwill and fellowship among those engaged in the headwear industry.
Garth was previously the Vice President of THA, and was nominated for President by Todd Gardner of Dorfman Pacific hat company for his forward thinking ideals and progressive mindset. In his new position, Garth is dedicated to steadily driving the hat industry forward, and uniting the leaders of the Headwear Association.
He plans on revitalizing the hat industry, making it younger, hipper, and more accessible through the use of social media and influential bloggers. The continued partnership with wonderful publicist Jill Hammer of HammerINK will insure that the Headwear Association’s name is at the forefront of fashion outlets and magazines worldwide.
Garth wants it known just how excited he is about the nomination, saying that it feels amazing that people have taken notice of his hard work and commitment to the headwear industry, and that he feels very appreciated. Here’s to a successful term as president!
Our latest venture in philanthropy, Hats for American Heroes is the result of one simple question. One evening, Garth and Hannah Watrous and their daughter Leilani were having a typical family dinner. Throughout the course of conversation, Leilani brought up a very important question. Why is it that when servicemen and women return from their service, they seem to be forgotten and their selfless acts left unacknowledged? After hearing this, the Watrous’s have set out to do anything and everything they can to give back to those who have given everything.
Garth and Hannah were awarded Challenge Coins to commemorate their efforts towards veterans.
They contacted American Dream U to inquire about any ways that they could be of service to our veterans. American Dream U is a non-profit dedicated to helping our military get the education and access to resources they need to find their dream job or to start a business of their own. American Dream U then invited Garth and Hannah to Washington D.C where they were given the opportunity to tour the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and later attend an event put on by American Dream U where Garth had the opportunity to speak in front of a captivated audience of veterans, discussing entrepreneurial advice and aspects of business. Afterward, Garth and Hannah insured that each and every veteran was able to walk away with a hat of their choice.
This event was the first of many opportunities to give back to our veterans. Stay tuned for more like this one!
It’s not too often we hear stories of true, genuine American heroes. Command Master Chief Navy SEAL Steve Viola is one such hero. He’s a man that has seen just about everything and overcome every variety of challenge that life has posed him with. Overcoming these issues, Steve says, is all about how you approach them.
Garth, Hannah and Steve at Steve’s 30 year retirement ceremony.
There’s two ways to do something. The right way, or again. In Steve’s eyes, failures are not a bad thing. They are instead an opportunity to learn and improve. It’s all about humbleness. The ability to analyze and learn from your mistakes is what separates the achievers from those who merely try. Although highly decorated, Steve’s path to heroism was not without obstacles. Initially, Steve desired to do a 2 year service and return to college, however during his term a friend convinced him to attend BUD/S or Basic Underwater Demolitions/SEAL training. After a grueling 6 weeks of SEAL training, Steve failed the running test by only two seconds. Determined to prove himself, he returned 6 months later, only to fail the water treading test. You know what they say, the third time’s the charm. After finally passing BUD/S, Steve was deployed in the Gulf War. Sometime during his service, he was recommended to attend the Green Beret Medic School. During his attendance there, he failed the final exam by only a few points. This meant he had to repeat the course from day 1. Steve doesn’t look at the setbacks as detrimental however, instead viewing them as beneficial. Steve says that repeating all of the training for BUD/S and the Green Beret Medic School only made him better at it because he had been practicing it for so long.
Steve says that your failures do not define you. He comes from a community where the difficult is done immediately, and the impossible is done by appointment. Everyone is a work in progress and learning from your mistakes is what gives us the ability to improve ourselves. In his words, his primary mission is to help everyone willing to improve to succeed in life. Take it from someone who’s seen everything and overcome countless adversities, if you have a capable attitude you will see results!
We’d love to take some time to highlight one of our wonderful hat ambassadors! If the Steampunk world was personified into the body and soul of a single person, that person would be Doc Phineas! There’s hardly a more distinct character than he.
Doc Phineas has an intriguing story for any day of the week! In fact, he’s probably runner-up for Most Interesting Man in the World! Doc is a seasoned world traveler, with experiences in 92 countries around the globe. He is a veteran actor who has starred in 15 Hollywood motion pictures. During his college years in the SF Bay Area he wrote, scored and produced 18 Broadway style shows which were produced at the Grace Church in San Jose, CA where he was Youth Minister. On top of this, he has produced 3 musical CD’s, authored 5 books, and has been teaching for over 45 years.
It seems that since birth, even, Doc Phineas has had an affinity for artistic performance. At the age of 3, he went into full on dance lessons, tap, ballet, gymnastics, singing, violin, piano, and drum lessons. Every weekend his mother took him to do fancy dancing at Buffalo ranch in Akron, Oklahoma. From ages 5 to 8 he appeared as a regular tap dancer on the Pinky Lee Show on television, with appearances on Howdy Doody, the Mickey Mouse Club. He even made guest appearances on The Lone Ranger, Jungle Jim. As he got older his piano skills really developed and he could play old fashioned rinky tink piano tunes. As a young teenager he was dressed up in a bowler and spatz and even a fake moustache, knocking out the tunes at the Long Branch Saloon in Dodge City, Kansas where they filmed Gunsmoke. Doc Phineas claims that he adopted the style known as Steampunk as early as the 1950’s!
He soon landed a full scholarship to attend UC Berkeley and relocated to San Francisco, where he worked 3 jobs and produced broadway style shows for the children at a local church, where he was a youth minister. When he completed his BA degree he got a scholarship to study in India. He then headed off to India where he studied yoga under the tutelage of the great Indian saint Sri Anandamayi Ma. He completed his MCE at Madras University, and headed back to Berkeley to continue work on his Ph.D. He was very thin being 6 ft tall and when he returned from India he weighed only 105 lbs as he had gone through famine there. When he was walking in San Francisco one day in long flowing Indian clothing, the fashion diva Sabina saw him and signed him into her agency as a male model. He became a celebrated male model working for House of Dior in Paris and the house model of I Magnin in San Francisco appearing in GQ magazine and on fashion runways all over the world.
His cousin was on her way to Hollywood to appear on Police Woman and St. Elsewhere so she took him to Hollywood and he ended up with parts on Young and Restless, and was featured in OOKid, Alexa, Out For Blood, Oakbay, Ardvarks, and Batman Forever. He was also working as a set designer and consequently ended up doing designing for Bette Davis, Doris Day, Barbara Streisand, and Michael Jackson for their homes. One night at a party for Wolfgang Puck, he met Tony Curtis. They became such great friends, Tony invited Doc to be on his production team and he worked with him on the last films of his life. He always plays characters that are like Steampunks and old characters in a Western city; the piano player in a bar, the old shop keeper in a western town. Tony asked Doc to move to Las Vegas so they could keep working together . In the year 2000 he had finished his Ph.D. at London University, Shefferton College, so he continued working in productions and teaching in the Las Vegas area. As a member of the Single Action Shooting Society he continued to work on Old Time Movies out at Bonnie Springs Ranch and Calico Ghost Town. Five years ago, he noticed the transformation of some of his students at UNLV to Victorian clothes, top hats, monocles and goggles. He told them he had been wearing that attire since he was a boy. They begged him to sponsor the Steampunk Group at UNLV they told him they couldn’t find one faculty member to back them up, that people laughed at them and they weren’t really welcome at Renaissance Faire…they loved this genre of fiction but they felt sad and alone. He decided it was time to resurrect Dr. Phineas, a character he had once played.
He was named President of the Steampunk Guild and they got organized so that they could have meetings, learn more about garb, enjoy tea and conversation with eachother, work on wonderful inventions, and travel to archeological sites and digs all over the world including Valley of the Kings in Egypt! Without Doc Phineas’ drive and dedication to the fashion subgenre, who knows where the world of Steampunk would be!
Who watched the Oscar’s this weekend? We love seeing so many talented individuals in one place! Before the ceremonies started, we had the chance to attend the GBK Pre-Oscars Gifting Suite! We met a ton of new and interesting people there, and had the chance to reconnect with some of our old friends! This time, the event was held in a gorgeous Beverly Hills home!
While we were there, we got to check in with our friend Viola Davis. After the event, she went on to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in “Fences”! By winning this Oscar, she has become the 23rd member of the “Acting Triple Crown” club, by winning an Emmy, Tony, and an Oscar over the course of her career.
