Jacob’s Gallery: Talent, Dedication, and Achievement!

Located in the historic black hills of South Dakota, in the aptly named town of Deadwood, lies the gallery of a family dedicated to their craft. World renowned artist Scott Jacobs and his family have opened an art gallery here, to let the world know their passion for creating and displaying beautiful pieces of artwork along with many of our hat styles. His daughter, Olivia, does a fantastic job managing the gallery and is an absolute joy to work with.

Scott Jacobs grew up in Cranford, New Jersey, and graduated from Westfield High School where he drew pen-and-ink illustrations for the school’s newspaper. Jacobs worked for an art gallery as a teen and then went on to sell art out of a van. At 19, he purchased an art gallery at below market value and was an art dealer for 25 years. In 1989, his wife, Sharon, gave him an easel, canvases and paints as a Christmas gift. Jacobs began painting and displaying his work in his own galleries under the assumed name Escotete. Based on client feedback, he concentrated on creating work in a photorealistic style. In 1993, a short time after painting two pieces “Fat Boy” and “Live to Ride,” which featured Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Jacobs’ work was seen by the motorcycle manufacturer. Harley-Davidson signed Jacobs as its first officially licensed artist in its fine art program, a position he continues to hold.

Jacobs’ work has also been licensed by Chevrolet, Ford, Mattel, Marilyn Monroe Estates and Elvis Presley Enterprises and others. His work has appeared on Franklin Mint Collector Plates, apparel and other home décor items. As of 2013, Jacobs had been the official artist for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 17 times. Other subjects of Jacobs’ work include game room still life paintings, wine and spirits, women in masks, cars and florals. Jacobs’ original works sell for $40,000-$150,000.

Some well known collectors of Jacobs’ work include Willie G. Davidson, Bill Davidson, Jeff Bleustein, Senator Ben Campbell, John Elway, Carl Malone, Don King, Dan Aykroyd, Robert Patrick, Steve Hendrickson, Arlen Ness, Joan Lunden, Kathy Ireland, Kim Alexis, Malcolm Forbes, Clarence Clemons, Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, ZZ Top, Survivor and Loverboy.

Scott is a man of great character. He spent time on the show “Secret Millionaire” where in each episode, a millionaire leaves their luxurious life behind, takes on a secret identity and lives undercover in a much much poorer area of the country for a week. Living on a limited budget (Usually less than $150) with no modern conveniences they must forge their own way in the community – working and volunteering alongside the locals and finding individuals or projects whom they think deserve a cut of their fortune. On their final day, the millionaires come clean and reveal their true identity to the people they have chosen, surprising them with gifts of thousands of dollars to improve their lives. They must donate at least $100,000 in total. “I gave $180,000, which is like a painting and a half for me,” Scott says. “I have seven motorcycles, four homes and eight cars. I can afford to give more. And I will give more. I will continue to be philanthropic the more successful I am.”

“I think one of the reasons I became the most successful person in my family financially is that my dad always told me growing up that I was a failure,” he says. “So I was out to basically prove my parents wrong.

“I worked for every single thing I have,” he says. “Nothing was ever given to me. Every dollar I made was a separate brush stroke on a piece of canvas.

“Now to be able to go back to New Jersey and be immersed in what we were immersed in is a real reality check. Anybody can have a reversal of fortune at any time.”

Scott is not the only artist in the family. Alexa Jacobs is also a very talented artist, and is very passionate about her work. At age 15, she started working part time for her dad, Scott as his under-painter.  The first time she painted lasted a brief 15 minutes before she was uninterested and ready to move onto her next teen adventure. Although, Scott thought he lost his apprentice forever, Alexa worked on and off for him for the next several years, amongst many other odd jobs, including modeling for Harley-Davidson. It wasn’t until she had eight years of painting experience with her father that she gained enough courage to create some of her own master pieces.  Her first several years painting her own canvases were spent experimenting with many different mediums, subjects and styles. Although she believes in the world of art you never stop discovering, she is confident she has found her niche.

Chris Hat Day in the Sun 2016 Highlight American Hat Makers JPG

One of the highlights of the day was meeting Chris from Aptos. He had heard about our event while he was at his dermatologist’s getting a cancerous growth removed. While he was in the waiting room he saw a postcard announcing Hat Day in the Sun and he decided to come check it out. After such a health scare, he was thrilled to receive a quality hat that could stand up to the sun and heat and still keep him protected.

Thank you Kathleen Rooney, RN.LE. for volunteering last year

Kathleen Rooney, RN.LE. volunteered her time to hand out sunscreen and lip balm and talk about the importance of sun protection with all of our visitors. Thank you Kathleen and Palo Alto Medical Foundation’s Santa Cruz Dermatology Group!
ATTENTION ALL DERMATOLOGISTS/SKINCARE PROFESSIONALS! We’re really interested in providing skin screenings at future Hat Day in the Sun events, so if you would be able to donate your time to provide a necessary service to the community please contact us so we can coordinate!

According to Hannah Watrous, Director of Global Marketing and Branding for American Hat Makers (and organizer of the event), “It wasn’t about giving away free hats. It was about educating our kids about the dangers of skin cancer– really relevant in a beach community.”
One thing we love doing here at American Hat Makers is staying connected through the use of press tours! Here we’ve attached photos from our previous press tours and we look forward to stopping by your facilities sometime next week to gift you a hat to keep you safe from the suns harmful rays! If any of your wonderful staff would like a free hat, tell them to stop by on the day of the event! #PressTour

Here’s a recap of our 2014 event!

Did you know skin cancer is the most common of all cancers? The fact is 90% of all skin cancers are caused by over-exposure to the sun.

The good news is there are many things you can do to decrease your exposure to the sun, and reduce the possibility for skin cancer.

Here are a few top tips to protect your skin that you can start today!

  • WEAR A HAT! You can purchase an American made leather hat here.
  • Seek out the shade between the hottest part of the day 10am-4pm
  • Do not burn, and avoid tanning and UV tanning booths
  • Wear lip balm with sunscreen everyday
  • Cover up with clothing — breathable long-sleeved shirts and pants are best
  • Wear large UV-blocking sunglasses
  • Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher even on foggy days
  • For outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher
  • Apply 1 ounce of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating
  • Keep newborns out of the sun, and use sunscreen on babies over the age of six months
  • Examine your skin each month from head to toe and make note of any abnormal growths or moles
  • Schedule a yearly skin exam with your physician or dermatologists
  • Keep sunscreen in the car – for long car trips
  • Use extra sunscreen near water, snow, and sand – these surfaces reflect the intensity of UV rays
  • Buy extra bottles of sunscreen and keep in gym bag, trunk, diaper bag and purse
  • Lightly spray sunscreen in your hair or on head for extra protection

For more information or to buy UV-Protection Sun Hats, visit our American Hat Makers Hat Store.

Single Contour and Double Contour bands. What’s the difference?

Here at American Hat Makers, we offer a wide range of Hat Bands to accompany our hats. We offer some of our hat styles un-banded, which gives you the option to choose your own band from the various options we offer, or to make your own and make your hat truly unique! There is one key difference between the different bands we offer. Depending on the style of hat you have, you’ll need either a Single Contour or Double Contour band.

img_1277.jpg

A single contour crown with a single contour band.

FullSizeRender-1

A double contour crown with a double contour band.

Virtually any other hat company offers their hats utilizing a single contour design. For some of our hats, such as the Cyclone, the Silverado, and any of our fedora styles, there is only one contour around the crown, so you would need a Single Contour band.

The Cyclone (Single Contour)

For our top hat styles, such as an El Dorado or a Coachman, and our outdoor styles such as a Crusher or a Breeze, the crown features two contours instead of one. This gives the hat a more exaggerated style, and causes to hat to flow around the ears rather than going straight across your head. These styles would need a Double Contour band.

A huge thank you to Star Binding/Printing Company!

Lately here at American Hat Makers, one of our biggest goals has been designing and attaining all new tip stickers for the inside of our hats. These stickers are meant to carry our name out into the world, and make sure that our hats are marked and noticeable so people know just where they came from! Hannah, our marketing director, spent months going from company to company trying to find a suitable match for manufacturing our tip stickers but to no avail. That is, until we found Star Binding/Printing Company!

They said they love working with people in the hat industry because there are so many unique, interesting, and wonderful individuals they come across, and that everyone is so connected with each other! As far as their facility goes, it’s chock-full of original, antiquated equipment that was used since the start of the company. They even have an authentic Thomas Edison Dictaphone from 1878 on display!

How did Hats for American Heroes start?

fullsizeoutput_b413

Our latest venture in philanthropy, Hats for American Heroes is the result of one simple question. One evening, Garth and Hannah Watrous and their daughter Leilani were having a typical family dinner. Throughout the course of conversation, Leilani brought up a very important question. Why is it that when servicemen and women return from their service, they seem to be forgotten and their selfless acts left unacknowledged? After hearing this, the Watrous’s have set out to do anything and everything they can to give back to those who have given everything.

fullsizeoutput_b580

Garth and Hannah were awarded Challenge Coins to commemorate their efforts towards veterans.

fullsizeoutput_b559

They contacted American Dream U to inquire about any ways that they could be of service to our veterans. American Dream U is a non-profit dedicated to helping our military get the education and access to resources they need to find their dream job or to start a business of their own. American Dream U then invited Garth and Hannah to Washington D.C where they were given the opportunity to tour the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and later attend an event put on by American Dream U where Garth had the opportunity to speak in front of a captivated audience of veterans, discussing entrepreneurial advice and aspects of business. Afterward, Garth and Hannah insured that each and every veteran was able to walk away with a hat of their choice.
